Thrifty or Foolish?

Some people prefer eschew luxuries and aim for basic necessities in their everyday life. They might patch or mend old clothes, and make do with what they have rather than purchase the latest and greatest new things. For the most part, that’s sensible, but when it comes to mattresses, it can be penny wise and pound foolish as the old saying goes.

As a matter of fact, it’s not even penny wise since one of the best mattresses available, the memory foam mattress is no more expensive than an ordinary spring mattress. It’s true, though that nothing is cheaper than simply continuing to use an old mattress even though it is long past its prime. The downside to that is that spring mattresses do become worn out, and start to sag. Furthermore, the springs may degrade unevenly causing some of them to stick up higher than others, resulting a very uncomfortable situation. Still, some people are willing to put up with a little discomfort.

The trouble with this strategy is that a mattress that doesn’t support your back anymore because it sags in the middle can lead to serious and chronic back pain. Costs for treating that are going to make a new mattress’ cost seem like chump change. Back pain isn’t the only thing to worry about with old mattresses.

An uncomfortable mattress interferes with a good night’s sleep. Study after study proves that failing to get a good 7-8 hours of continuous sleep each night has serious implications for one’s health, one’s social interactions, and even one’s career or schoolwork. For example, in one study, researchers followed a group of subjects for a period of several years and found that those who slept less than 6 hours each night had a higher rate of death during the study period after correcting for all other factors. Reason number one to buy a new, comfortable mattress, like a memory foam mattress, that will let you sleep a full 8 hours each night is that is could help you live longer, according to this study.

Other studies have repeatedly shown that those who get 7-8 hours of sleep are better able to focus and concentrate on difficult problems than those who fail to achieve a full night’s sleep on a regular basis. Being able to concentrate on difficult problems will certainly affect the quality of one’s schoolwork, and even one’s success in the business world.

We’ve all heard the saying that someone “got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning” used to indicate that someone is grouchy or has a bad temper. Studies also back up the fact that lack of sleep increases one’s irritability and can interfere with their family life and social interactions.

Saving a few dollars by keeping an old mattress past its useful life isn’t worth even one of those potential consequences. Taken altogether, they present a compelling case for the purchase of a new mattress as soon as the old one starts to show signs of age.
